Down There

Early in my corporate career, I was asked to go to Mexico for six months to work on a project. The location was north of Tampico on the beach. However, my boss would not let me go because I was in the middle of an important project for him. I think he really thought that it might turn out like this song.

Where I Live

With my job, I can live almost anywhere, but I chose Southwest Florida. If you ever come down, I think you will understand why.

Freaky Tiki Faces

I heard a rumor about an outrageous party that spilled over to the beach and got pretty wild. The party wound down in the wee hours of the morning, and the participants found their clothes and what was left of their dignity and started making their way through the sand dunes to relative safety. Through a convergence of forces totally beyond his comprehension, one of the participants lost his way. He had to walk only one hundred yards, but he lost his way. He spent the remainder of the night walking through backyards, climbing over fences, battling lawn furniture, dodging guard dogs, and tripping over sprinklers. When he could no longer continue, he laid down his bruised, battered, and bleeding body in a lawn chair in some stranger’s backyard. Did I mention that this odyssey began about one hundred yards from his house? When he finally came to, the first thing he saw was a tiki statue. Since he felt so bad, he naturally assumed that he had died and gone to hell. When he realized that he was not dead, he promised himself that he would never, ever, drink and party again. To this very day, to my knowledge, this righteous man, has, through every week of his life, always failed to keep this promise. Makes you feel good, doesn’t it.

Navajo Rug

On my very first gig, Navajo Rug was the fourth song in the first set. I have played this song for a long time, and so many people have asked me to record it. Ian Tyson is one of my favorite songwriters, and Jerry Jeff Walker does a great version of this song.

Dreamin'

I used to have a brass porthole hanging on my office wall. Inside was a beautiful beach scene. When I got frustrated, I would open it and look at the picture as if I were on a boat anchored in a bay near Tahiti.

Rock Star School

I thought the music business was all red carpet treatment. Champagne, caviar, jets, swimming pools, movie stars. So far, it's hard work, no sleep and bad food. I guess my career counselor lied to me.

Water Days

No matter how bad it gets, a day on the water makes it better. I need more water days.

Mona

This song is based on a character in the book I keep intending to finish writing. I understand that some women will take a relationship from 0 to 60 real fast.

Trying to Hold The Wind Up With A Sail

I first heard this song on an old Jerry Jeff Walker album. I could never understand the lyrics as Jerry Jeff sang them, but I loved the chorus.

Spending The Night Alone

This song first took shape many years ago after a friend lost his wife. I put myself in his place.

Don't Make Me Go

I have great fans, and they show such enthusiasm. I thought I would try a little reverse psychology.
